"אימא שלי, יפה קלדרון, הייתה הבת הצעירה מבין ארבע אחיות. כשהייתה בת עשר פלשו הנאצים ליוגוסלביה, ומשפחתה ברחה לאלבניה. אביה פיזר את הבנות בבתים של מוסלמים ושילם להם כדי שישמרו על הבנות. אימי התחבאה במשך שנתים בבית מוסלמי והסתירה את יהדותה. אחר כך חזר אביה ואסף אותה ואת כל המשפחה, ויחד הם חזרו ליוגוסלביה, שם סיימה אימי שלוש שנות לימודי תיכון בהצטיינות.

ב-1949 עלתה המשפחה ארצה באונייה קפאלוס בלי רכוש ובלי לדעת את השפה. באונייה הכירה אימי את אבי, דוד קלדרון, שהיה פרטיזן ועלה לארץ לבדו. כשהם הגיעו לארץ הם עברו לירושלים, ויחד הקימו סטודיו לקרמיקה, שמכר בארץ ובעולם יצירות אומנות של דמויות מהוויית הארץ הניבנית. אבי, שהיה ממקימי האקדמיה 'בצלאל', הקים עם אימי משפחה לתפארת – 2 בנים ו-3 נכדים, שהם קצינים בצה"ל."

“I am very happy that I live in Israel and that my children grew up in the Land of Israel. All Jews should come to our country.”

“My mother Yaffa Calderon was the youngest of four sisters. When she was ten years old, the Nazis invaded Yugoslavia, and her family fled to Albania. Her father placed the girls with Muslim families who he paid to look after them. My mother hid for two years in a Muslim home and hid her Jewishness. Then my father returned and collected her and all the girls, and together they returned to Yugoslavia, where my mother completed high school with distinction.

In 1949 the family arrived in Israel on the ship Kephalos, without any possessions and not knowing the language. On the ship my mother met my father, David Calderon, who was a partisan and came to Israel alone. When they reached Israel, they went to Jerusalem and together set up a ceramics studio, which sold artistic pieces representing images from the rebuilt land in Israel and abroad. My father, who was one of the founders of Bezalel Art School, started a wonderful family with my mother – 2 sons and 3 grandsons, who are all officers in the IDF.”
