"כשהתחילה המלחמה אביה של סבתא רבקה נלקח למחנה ריכוז ונרצח בו. היא ואימה נאלצו לברוח מהבית, הן נעזרו בחבר מוסלמי שזייף בעבורן תעודות. בשנת 1946 הן הגיעו למחנה הריכוז ראב, שהיה מחנה ריכוז של איטלקים, וחיו בו במשך שנתיים. כשאיטליה נכנעה, הן ברחו וחיו ביערות שביוגוסלביה עם הפרטיזנים עד לסיום המלחמה.

החיים ביערות היו קשים, רוב הזמן הן היו רעבות, נאלצו לברוח כל הזמן מהנאצים ולשרוד וחלו מחלות. סבתא נאלצה ללכת יחפה בשלג כי לא היו לה נעלים, וכשפגשה גרמני ביער הצטלבה כדי שלא לחשוף את יהדותה.

לאחר המלחמה, כשסבתי הייתה בת שלוש־עשרה, הן עלו לארץ. בתחילה הן גרו במעברות, ולאט­־לאט החיים האירו להן פנים. סבתא שלי היא הסבתא הטובה בעולם, היא אישה מדהימה ומודל להערצה, אישה מלאת שמחה, שהקימה כנג כל הסיכויים משפחה לתפארת."

“When the war started, Grandma Rivka’s father was taken a concentration camp and murdered. She and her mother were forced to flee. They were helped by a Muslim friend who forged papers for them. In 1946 they arrived at Rab concentration camp, which was a camp of Italians, and they stayed there for two years. When Italy surrendered, they fled and lived in the forests of Yugoslavia with the partisans until the war ended.

Life in the forests was very hard, most of the time they were hungry and had to keep running away from the Nazis, and they suffered diseases. Grandma had to go barefoot in the snow because she had no shoes, and when she met a German in the forest, she crossed herself to hide her Jewishness.

After the war, when Grandma was thirteen, they immigrated to Israel. At first they lived in transit camps, and gradually their lives improved. My Grandma is the best grandma in the world, she’s a wonderful woman and very admirable, always full of joy, and against all the odds she started a glorious family.”
