The Heroism of Aner Shapira: An Unforgettable Night of Remembrance at FOZ

There are moments when time seems to stand still, and the collective heart of a nation overflows with both grief and a fierce, unspoken pride. Last night, the Friends of Zion (FOZ) Museum hosted a deeply moving Memorial Day event that served as a powerful reminder of the cost of our freedom and the heights of the human spirit.

We were profoundly honored to host the family of Aner Shapira a name that has become synonymous with ultimate courage and self-sacrifice.

A Human Shield in the Darkness
During the evening, Aner’s father shared the harrowing yet inspiring account of his son’s final battle. In the chaos of the October 7th attacks, Aner found himself inside a crowded, dark roadside shelter Aner took command.

Standing at the entrance as a literal human shield, he displayed unimaginable composure. As terrorists tossed grenade after grenade into the shelter, Aner caught them and threw them back, one by one. By manually repelling these explosives, he saved the lives of those trapped inside, eventually giving his own life so that others might live.

A Legacy of Courage and Love
There wasn’t a dry eye in the room as the story unfolded. It was more than a chronicle of war; it was a masterclass in the love of one’s fellow man. Aner was not just a soldier; he was a young leader with a giant heart whose actions defined the very essence of nobility.

“Aner’s story is the story of our nation a story of a people who rise from the depths of pain to sanctify life.”

Honoring the Fallen
As we observed Memorial Day, Aner’s legacy served as a beacon for all of us. We gather not just to mourn the loss of such incredible individuals, but to honor the legacy they left behind.

We remember and honor Aner Shapira and all the heroes of Israel who, in their deaths, commanded us to live.

May their memories be a blessing. 🕯️
